Hello, and thank you for your interest in AP Art and Design! Please feel free to navigate around the website for a sneak peek of what to expect in this class. 


AP art summer assignments can include self-portraits, still lifes, and compositional studies. The goal is to help students build a portfolio of work that demonstrates their skills and sustained investigation. 


Self-portrait: Create a portrait that tells  about you, using any medium except digital or photography 

Still life: Draw a still life from life, not a photograph 

Compositional studies: Create two or more arrangements that explore perspective, visual hierarchy, and positive and negative space 

Final piece: Create a high-quality piece based on your best concept 

Fabric study: Create a study using fabric 

Shiny or reflective object: Create a zoomed-in image of a shiny or reflective object 

Artist study: Research and create a list of five artists you like, along with copies of their work 

Sculpture: Create a sculpture that you can use for your portfolio



Pick a topic that's personally significant to you

Avoid topics that are too general or cliché

Consider using a non-traditional medium or technique

Demonstrate sustained investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision
